About Two Girls Working
Two Girls Working is the collaboration
of artists Tiffany Ludwig and Renee Piechocki. Since 2001, they have produced Trappings,
a national, multi-media, project incorporating public art and performance art
that explores the complicated landscape of power and its relationship to personal
identity. The heart of the project is the question what do you wear that makes
you feel powerful? They have interviewed over 500 women at 70 interview sessions
across the United States. Their website, www.twogirlsworking.com is
a public archive of women who have participated in the project, exhibition images,
and press. Their book, Trappings:
Stories of Women, Power and Clothing was published in the fall of 2007 by
Rutgers University Press.
In July 2006, they launched the national traveling exhibition Trappings:
Stories of Women, Power and Clothing at the Regina Gouger Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA). The exhibition is scheduled to travel through December 2009, including stops at Bronx River Arts Center (NY), Simmons College (MA), and 516 Arts (NM). They have developed public installations of Trappings for the Nashville International Airport (Nashville, TN) and the public bus system of Pittsburgh, PA. Their project for the Pittsburgh bus system was selected by the Public Art Network of Americans for the Arts’ 2005 Year In Review, a survey of the year's most successful and innovative public art projects. The artists recently developed a long-term installation in Pittsburgh at the Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s Health, which will be open to the public in November 2007. They have received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Heinz Endowments, The Pittsburgh Foundation, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation’s Artists and Communities grant program, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Sprout Fund’s Seed Award, and the Orange County (NC) Arts Council.
